The Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) has issued a strong condemnation of the United Progressive Party (UPP) and its affiliated Facebook page, "Real News," alleging that the opposition party created and distributed a fraudulent document intended to mislead voters. According to Antigua News Room, the ABLP described the act as a sign of political desperation from a struggling campaign.
The document in question, reportedly circulated through party proxies on WhatsApp and published on the UPP's "Real News" Facebook page, purports to be an official letter from Senator Shenella Govia, Leader of Government Business in the Senate. The ABLP has flatly dismissed the letter as a forgery.
In a formal statement, the ABLP outlined what it described as clear indicators that the document is fraudulent, arguing that the flaws in the fabrication reflect poorly on the opposition's competence. The party stopped short of detailing the specific red flags in its public release but maintained that they are readily apparent.
"This latest stunt by the UPP and their 'Real News' mouthpiece is a direct assault on the intelligence of the Antiguan and Barbudan people," the ABLP stated. "When a political organization realizes they cannot win on their record or their vision, they resort to the gutter."
The party urged the public to exercise caution and remain alert to what it characterised as a wave of misinformation being spread by UPP-aligned sources. The ABLP framed the incident as an attempt by the opposition to salvage what it called a failing campaign.
The ABLP concluded its statement by reaffirming its commitment to integrity and the democratic process, vowing not to allow what it described as "blatant and amateurish lies" to undermine the upcoming electoral contest. The UPP had not issued a public response at the time of reporting.
