The Chairman of the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC), Arthur G.B. Thomas, has issued a nationwide appeal for citizens to conduct themselves with discipline and respect on election day, as the country prepares for the April 30 general elections.
According to Antigua.news, Thomas addressed the nation during final preparations for the vote, urging voters, political parties, and all stakeholders to uphold the rule of law and preserve public confidence in the electoral process.
"Conduct yourselves in a manner that reflects the dignity of our nation," Thomas stated, setting the tone for his broader message on civic responsibility.
The ABEC Chairman was unequivocal in his call for orderly behaviour at polling stations. "Order, compliance and mutual respect are not optional. They are essential to the credibility of the outcome," he said, calling on voters to show respect for election officials, security personnel, and supporters of opposing political parties alike.
Thomas also issued a firm reminder regarding voter identification. Only electors in possession of valid identification cards will be permitted to cast ballots on election day. "If you have not yet replaced your voter's ID card, you must do so immediately. No elector can be permitted to vote without a valid voter identification card," he warned.
To assist those who have yet to obtain replacement cards, the Commission has extended its working hours and increased staffing. However, Thomas made clear that the responsibility to act rests with individual voters.
Political parties also received a direct reminder of their legal obligations. Thomas stressed that all campaign materials must be removed from polling divisions before election day, ensuring that voting spaces remain neutral and free from undue influence.
With the polls now days away, the ABEC Chairman urged all eligible voters to prepare thoroughly, comply with electoral rules, and engage peacefully in the democratic process. "Participate responsibly, peacefully and lawfully," he said, reinforcing his call for a calm and orderly election day across Antigua and Barbuda.
