The newly restored LIAT Air route between Antigua and Guadeloupe is expected to boost visitor arrivals to Antigua and Barbuda, according to Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority Chief Executive Officer Colin James.
According to Antigua.news, James made the remarks during the inaugural LIAT Air trip to Guadeloupe on Friday, telling attendees that tourism officials examined historical travel data before throwing their support behind the route's return.
"What we did, we looked at historic data because historic data tells you how it used to perform. It used to perform very well," James said.
James pointed to existing ferry services between Guadeloupe and Antigua as further proof of strong demand between the two islands, noting that ferry arrivals regularly bring hundreds of visitors who shop, dine and spend time in Antigua. He argued that the added flexibility of air travel could expand that market further, enabling travellers to make short weekend trips or extended vacations to the destination.
Tourism officials are now directing significant efforts toward educating travel agents and building destination awareness within the French market, with the goal of ensuring the route's long-term viability.
James also drew attention to Antigua and Barbuda's cultural ties with neighbouring Caribbean islands, citing Dominica as a notable example. He said improved air connectivity benefits the broader region and advances the cause of regional integration.
