The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has issued a stern appeal for road safety following the death of National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) worker O'Keen Lightfoot, who lost his life in a traffic accident while on duty.
During Thursday's post-Cabinet press briefing, Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant said ministers expressed "grave concern" over what they described as increasing reckless and irresponsible driving across the country. Cabinet extended its profound condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Lightfoot, describing the loss as deeply saddening.
The tragedy was compounded by a second incident in which another NSWMA employee was struck by a vehicle while working along a roadway on Wednesday morning. Merchant confirmed that Lightfoot's death occurred shortly before that separate incident took place.
Ministers acknowledged the essential contribution made daily by sanitation and waste management workers, recognising their role in maintaining the cleanliness, health and well-being of communities throughout Antigua and Barbuda.
"The Cabinet is therefore appealing to all motorists to exercise greater caution, patience, and responsibility while driving, particularly in areas where public workers are actively engaged in duties along the roadways," Merchant said.
The government stressed that road safety is a shared national responsibility, urging drivers to obey traffic laws, reduce excessive speed and remain alert near roadside workers and pedestrians. Cabinet also reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing discussions with relevant authorities on measures to improve road safety and better protect workers in vulnerable roadside environments.
In addition, Cabinet acknowledged the recent passing of former meteorologist Philbert Mason and contractor and philanthropist Evrod Roberts. Ministers paid tribute to Mason's exceptional contribution to the field of meteorology and to national development, while recognising Roberts for his enduring legacy as a philanthropist, contractor and dedicated supporter of culture and sports — contributions that significantly advanced both the creative arts and the construction industry.
The Government of Antigua and Barbuda extended heartfelt condolences to the families of Philbert Mason, Evrod Roberts and O'Keen Lightfoot, and expressed prayers for strength and comfort for all those affected by their losses.
