Senator Joel Anderson Rayne was sworn in as Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Corporate Governance and Public Private Partnerships on Wednesday, just days after his appointment to the Senate. The ceremony took place at Government House, marking a swift elevation into an expanded role in national service.
Governor General Sir Rodney Williams presided over the swearing-in, noting that the appointment reflected the government's confidence in Rayne's "capacity and commitment" to serve the people of Antigua and Barbuda.
Rayne was appointed to the Senate on May 8. In his new role as Parliamentary Secretary, he will assist with ministerial administration, parliamentary engagement and government operations.
Sir Rodney used the occasion to underscore the weight of the responsibility being entrusted to the newly appointed senator. "Before even taking a seat at the first calling of the Senate, he has now been entrusted with another important responsibility and an expanded role of service to the people of Antigua and Barbuda," the Governor General said. He described the position as one demanding "discipline, dedication and the willingness to serve diligently."
The ceremony also drew attention to updated constitutional oaths now administered during such occasions. The revised oaths place allegiance on Antigua and Barbuda's Constitution and laws, rather than the monarchy.
Ministers, senators, family members and other government officials attended the ceremony.
