Garfield "Garry" Gonsalves, one of Antigua and Barbuda's former top footballers, has thrown his hat into the ring for the presidency of the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association (ABFA), pledging that his team is best positioned to advance the sport locally.
According to Antigua Observer, Gonsalves is among four candidates set to contest football's top administrative position in the upcoming ABFA elections. He is the brother of the current ABFA president and former national striker Everton "Batow" Gonsalves.
A key pillar of Garry Gonsalves' platform, as reported by Antigua Observer, is a sharpened focus on the Under-20 national programme — a priority he says would take centre stage should he win the presidency.
The former footballer's entry into the race adds a notable dimension to the contest, given his family ties to the incumbent president. His experience as a player at the highest local level is expected to form a central part of his campaign pitch to ABFA delegates.
