Antigua and Barbuda has taken a significant step toward sustainable waste management with the hosting of a regional capacity-building workshop focused on Waste-to-Energy (WtE) technologies. According to Antigua.news, the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and regional partners, organised the training initiative to strengthen the country's ability to assess and implement WtE solutions.
The workshop, held at the Villa Community Centre, brought together representatives from several government ministries and agencies. Participants worked to sharpen their capacity to evaluate Waste-to-Energy proposals across technical, environmental, financial, and institutional criteria.
Attendees examined key considerations specific to Waste-to-Energy systems within Small Island Developing States (SIDS), drawing on regional and international case studies to identify successful approaches and understand common challenges facing nations of similar size and circumstance.
The training also addressed potential risks associated with WtE proposals and introduced participants to practical tools designed to support evidence-based decision-making and project evaluation.
Officials noted that initiatives of this nature are increasingly vital as Antigua and Barbuda continues to explore innovative solutions for waste management and environmental sustainability.
The workshop forms part of broader national efforts to advance circular economy principles, reduce environmental impact, and build a more resilient future for the twin-island state.
