Antigua and Barbuda authorities have issued a health advisory urging residents — particularly those with respiratory conditions — to limit prolonged outdoor activity as a new wave of Saharan Dust is expected to sweep across the islands from tonight through Wednesday.
According to Antigua.news, the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services has forecast a deterioration in air quality to Moderate levels, with the Air Quality Index projected to range between 60 and 80. In response to the incoming dust plume, authorities have activated an Air Pollution Alert Level II.
Forecasters note that this marks the ninth significant Saharan Dust event to impact the country so far in 2026.
While the general population faces a low overall health risk, officials caution that sensitive groups may experience irritation or breathing difficulties as dust particle concentrations rise in the atmosphere. Those considered most vulnerable include children, elderly residents, outdoor workers, and individuals living with heart or respiratory illnesses.
Health officials are urging vulnerable persons to monitor their symptoms closely and remain indoors if conditions deteriorate. Residents managing asthma or other respiratory conditions are also advised to keep their prescribed medications within easy reach.
