ROSEAU, Dominica — The leader of Dominica's main opposition United Workers Party (UWP) has extended an olive branch to disaffected party members, calling for unity while outlining a broad economic vision for the country. According to Antigua News Room, the appeal came amid recent controversy surrounding the party that has circulated on both traditional and social media platforms.
Addressing supporters and critics alike, the UWP leader acknowledged internal tensions while urging members to set aside personal differences in the interest of national renewal. "I do not pretend to be a perfect servant, but I am a public servant committed to taking all ideas on board," he stated.
The statement comes after more than twenty-five years of the current administration's hold on power — a tenure the UWP leader argues has left too many Dominicans struggling, too many opportunities missed, and the national interest repeatedly subordinated to political survival.
Central to his address was the party's proposed 'Ten Pillars to Shared Economic Prosperity for all Dominicans,' a policy framework anchored in the revitalisation of the agriculture sector, the development of a robust manufacturing sector, the commercialisation of a water industry, tax reform, and relief from the high cost of living, among other initiatives.
While welcoming differing views as part of a healthy democracy, the UWP leader was firm that division and distraction would not be permitted to derail what he described as a critical national conversation. "We will never all agree on strategy, style or substance, but we cannot let down Dominica and pander to our egos," he said.
He directed a pointed appeal specifically at disaffected party members, urging them to come together to resolve lingering internal issues. "I want particularly to extend an olive branch to all disaffected members of the United Workers Party to come together in a conscious effort to thrash out any issues that continue to fester," he said.
The leader urged UWP supporters to maintain calm, discipline, and focus, asserting that the strength of the movement lies in vision, credibility, and unity rather than political noise. He also called on all Dominicans — supporters, critics, and undecided citizens — to commit to constructive engagement and shared responsibility.
"This is not a moment for political gamesmanship. This is a moment for national renewal," he declared, adding that true progress would require collective sacrifice from all sectors of Dominican society.
The UWP leader closed his statement with a call for wisdom and unity to guide Dominica toward a stronger economic future.
