The government has announced plans to demolish and rebuild the aging pier at Keeling Point, replacing it with a modern concrete structure at one of Antigua and Barbuda's key fisheries landing sites.
According to Antigua News Room, the announcement followed a site visit by Minister of State Randy Baltimore and St. John's Rural West MP Michael Joseph, who met with Fisheries Division Coordinator Conrad Simon and members of the local fishing community.
Officials determined that repairs carried out in previous years are no longer adequate, and a full reconstruction has been identified as the best long-term solution. The project will involve replacing existing wooden support piles with concrete piles and constructing a reinforced concrete deck built to withstand harsh marine conditions.
The new structure will adopt a T-shaped design, departing from the current L-shaped layout. The change is intended to provide additional space and improved access for fishermen operating from the site.
The visit also touched on safety concerns following a recent shark attack involving a local fisherman. Minister Baltimore confirmed the fisherman is recovering and urged all marine users to remain vigilant as authorities continue to monitor reports of increased shark activity in the area.
Fisheries Division Coordinator Conrad Simon welcomed the planned redevelopment. The project forms part of broader government efforts to strengthen fisheries infrastructure and improve working conditions across the sector.
