A father's concern over a missing kitchen knife inadvertently led to the discovery of suspected cannabis inside his teenage son's school bag at a local secondary school on Friday.

According to Antigua News Room, the parent contacted the school and requested that staff inspect his 14-year-old son's backpack after noticing the knife had disappeared from their home. Although no knife was found, school officials reportedly uncovered a quantity of cannabis concealed inside a plastic bag within the student's backpack.

The school reported the matter to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) shortly before 10:00 a.m. Officers attended the school and took possession of the substance along with the student's bag.

The teenager was subsequently interviewed at CID headquarters, with his mother present. As reported by Antigua News Room, the student told investigators that he had left his bag with another individual while he went to purchase sweets, and claimed to have been unaware that cannabis was inside.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
