Stakeholders gathered in June for the 2025 Annual Accountability Seminar of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) Delegation in Antigua and Barbuda, engaging in broad dialogue on the country's agricultural challenges and opportunities. According to Antigua Observer, the event was held under the theme "Agriculture Today: Food Sustainability for the Future."
Discussions at the seminar spanned a range of pressing issues, including food safety, agro-processing, and the strengthening of local food production. Participants also examined youth engagement in the agricultural sector and access to the equipment farmers need to operate effectively.
The seminar served as a platform for key voices across the agricultural community to hold the IICA delegation accountable for its work in Antigua and Barbuda, while also charting a path forward for the sector. The breadth of topics addressed reflects growing concern over food sustainability as the twin-island nation looks to reduce dependence on imports and build greater resilience in its food systems.
Youth involvement in agriculture emerged as a notable point of discussion, with participants recognising the need to attract and retain younger generations in the field. Access to modern agricultural equipment was similarly highlighted as a barrier that continues to limit the productivity and potential of local farmers.
The annual seminar represents an ongoing effort by IICA to foster collaboration between regional institutions, government bodies, and agricultural stakeholders in advancing sustainable food production across the Caribbean.
