The Chair of the Antigua and Barbuda Festivals Commission (ABFC), Elizabeth Makhoul, is calling for stronger public participation and greater corporate investment as preparations for Carnival 2026 gather momentum.
According to Antigua News Room, Makhoul made the appeal during an appearance on WTP Media's Morning with Sly J, emphasising that the success of Carnival depends on active community involvement rather than passive spectatorship. She encouraged residents to attend events and show tangible support for local calypsonians, soca artistes and junior performers.
Makhoul also challenged radio and television stations to increase their promotion of local music, proposing dedicated programming that highlights Antiguan artistes and young talent.
On the corporate front, the ABFC chair urged businesses to take a more prominent role in safeguarding the nation's cultural heritage. She called on the private sector to sponsor artistes, support schools and invest in cultural initiatives that sustain the carnival tradition.
Makhoul confirmed that the commission has been actively supporting pre-Carnival activities since May 29, encompassing Calypso Tent events, pageant preparations and Pan in de City. She added that marketing efforts are already underway across both traditional and digital platforms, with backing from media partners locally and within the diaspora.
