A Vincentian national has been arrested and charged in connection with a collision that left national cyclist Tahjae Browne hospitalised, after police intercepted him at V.C. Bird International Airport as he attempted to flee the country. According to Antigua.news, authorities acted swiftly after learning the suspect was preparing to board a flight out of Antigua and Barbuda.
Police have charged 24-year-old Kishroy Harry with dangerous driving, driving without the owner's consent, driving without a valid driver's licence, and driving without insurance coverage.
The charges stem from a collision that occurred on Saturday, June 20, along Sir Sydney Walling Highway near the Antigua and Barbuda Transport Board. Browne was riding his bicycle when he was struck by a Toyota Vitz motor car. Video footage of the incident, which has been widely circulated on social media, captured the impact that knocked the national cyclist from his bicycle.
Browne was transported to the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, where he subsequently underwent surgery. He is reported to be recovering from his injuries.
As reported by Antigua.news, Harry disposed of the clothing he had been wearing at the time of the collision in the hours that followed the crash. Investigators later determined that he was making preparations to leave the country.
On Sunday, June 21, police intercepted Harry at V.C. Bird International Airport as he attempted to board a flight bound for St. Vincent. He was arrested on the spot and later formally charged in connection with the incident.
The case has drawn considerable public attention, particularly within the local cycling community, where calls for accountability have grown following the crash involving one of Antigua and Barbuda's top cyclists.
Harry is expected to make his first appearance before the Magistrate's Court on Thursday. Police investigations into the matter remain ongoing.
