The director of the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI SRC) is urging residents across the region to remain prepared rather than alarmed, following a series of significant earthquakes that have raised public concern in recent weeks.
According to Antigua Observer, the advisory comes in response to major earthquakes recorded in Venezuela, as well as a separate seismic event between Trinidad and Tobago and Grenada. The UWI Seismic Research Centre moved to address growing public anxiety in the wake of those incidents.
The UWI SRC director stressed that while alarm is not warranted, the earthquakes serve as an important reminder that the Caribbean sits within an active seismic zone. Residents throughout the region, including those in Antigua and Barbuda, are being encouraged to take preparedness seriously as a matter of routine safety rather than immediate crisis response.
The region has long been recognized as seismically active, and authorities consistently advise that communities maintain awareness of earthquake safety practices, emergency plans, and the importance of securing homes and workplaces against potential seismic activity.
