The government of Antigua and Barbuda is exploring plans to remove Rat Island in order to create additional land for container storage at the St. John's port, as the twin-island nation pushes forward with ambitions to develop the facility into a major transshipment hub.

According to Antigua Observer, Prime Minister Gaston Browne disclosed the proposal, citing insufficient space at the current port to accommodate the volume of containers required for expanded operations.

The plan forms part of a broader strategy to grow the St. John's port into a larger transshipment centre, a development that could significantly increase the facility's regional and commercial footprint.
