A High Court judge has sentenced a 56-year-old man to three years and six months in prison for sexually assaulting his five-year-old great-niece, according to Antigua News Room.

Justice John Spencer imposed the sentence on Friday after the defendant pleaded guilty last month to a single count of serious indecency.

The offence took place between March and September 2024 while the child was visiting her grandmother. The court heard that the abuse occurred after the grandmother briefly left the room where the two had been watching television together.

The matter came to light when the child returned home and complained of pain to her father. He urged the child's mother to report the incident to authorities, but no report was filed until he contacted police himself in January 2025. A subsequent medical examination revealed signs of an infection.

Following his arrest, the defendant admitted during a police interview that he had inappropriately touched the child, though he denied digitally penetrating her.

Justice Spencer handed down the three-year, six-month custodial sentence on Friday.
